Terms & Conditions

1. About these Terms

Welcome to buttercard.ca (the "Site"). By accessing or using this Site, you agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions ("Terms"). If you do not agree, please discontinue using the Site.

These Terms form a binding agreement between you and Butter, operating under the laws of British Columbia, Canada.

2. What Butter is

Butter is a credit card rewards tool. We help Canadians and Americans understand their spending and find credit cards that suit it, through our website tools and our Chrome extension.

Butter does not require an account. We do not operate a rebate, cashback, or payout program, and we do not hold funds on your behalf. Butter is an information and comparison tool, not a financial product.

3. Eligibility

To use this Site you must be the age of majority in your province or territory of residence: 19 in British Columbia, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon; 18 in all other Canadian provinces.

4. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms at any time. We will post the updated version on the Site and update the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the Site after changes are posted means you accept them.

5. Affiliate and compensation disclosure

Butter earns compensation (commissions or referral fees) when users apply for financial products through links on our Site, including through affiliate partner networks. We may receive compensation when you click a link, complete an application, or are approved for a product.

Our recommendations are generated from your spending data and publicly available earn rates. Compensation does not determine how cards are ranked or recommended — rankings are driven by reward value, not commissions. That said, we do not feature every financial product available in the market, and our content is not a comprehensive market comparison.

This disclosure is made in accordance with the Competition Bureau of Canada and, where applicable, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidelines.

6. Not a financial institution or advisor

Butter is not a bank, credit union, trust company, registered investment advisor, mortgage broker, or other regulated financial institution.

All content on the Site is for general informational purposes only. Nothing on this Site is personal financial, investment, legal, tax, or accounting advice. You should consult a qualified professional before making financial decisions, and you should confirm all product details directly with the issuer before applying.

7. Accuracy of information

We work to keep card information accurate and current, but financial product terms — rates, fees, rewards, and welcome offers — change frequently and may be out of date at any given moment. Reward and value estimates produced by our tools are illustrative projections based on the data you provide or on representative spending patterns, not guarantees of the rewards you will earn.

You must verify all product details directly with the financial institution before applying.

8. Your data and privacy

Our handling of your information is described in our Privacy Policy. In short: Butter does not require an account, does not sell your data, and does not store your bank statements. Spending analysis in your browser is processed locally; where you choose AI-assisted analysis, anonymised statement text is sent to our processing endpoint solely to return a result and is not retained. See the Privacy Policy for full detail.

9. Disclaimer of warranties

The Site is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, to the maximum extent permitted by law.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Butter and its operators will not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, the Site; your reliance on any information, estimate, or recommendation on the Site; any errors or omissions in the Site; or your decision to apply for or use any third-party financial product.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Butter from any claims, losses, liabilities, or legal fees arising out of your breach of these Terms, your misuse of the Site, or your violation of any law or third-party right.

12. Intellectual property and site use

All content on the Site is protected by copyright and trademark law. You may not copy, reproduce, or republish any part of the Site without permission. Framing, mirroring, scraping, and data-mining of the Site are prohibited.

13. Third-party links

The Site contains links to external websites operated by third parties, including credit card issuers and affiliate partners. Butter does not control and is not responsible for the accuracy, suitability, or safety of those external sites or their products.

14. Email communications

Butter does not require an account and does not send marketing email by default. If we ever introduce optional email updates, they will be sent only with your explicit consent, will include an unsubscribe link, and will comply with Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL).

15. Dispute resolution and governing law

Before taking any legal action, you agree to contact us at support@buttercard.ca so we can try to resolve the issue informally within 30 days.

Any claim relating to the Site must be brought within one (1) year after the cause of action arose, or it is permanently barred, except where a longer period is required by applicable consumer protection law.

These Terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada. You agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of British Columbia, except where mandatory local consumer protection laws apply to residents of other provinces.

16. Force majeure

Butter is not responsible for delays or failures caused by events beyond our reasonable control, including natural disasters, internet or telecom outages, cyberattacks, or third-party service failures.

17. Severability and entire agreement

If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, that part will be severed and the rest will remain in effect. These Terms and our Privacy Policy together form the entire agreement between you and Butter regarding the Site.

18. Contact

Questions about these Terms can be sent to support@buttercard.ca.

These Terms are provided in plain language for clarity and are not legal advice. Butter is an independent product and is not affiliated with any financial institution except as an affiliate marketing partner.
